Peter Kettlewell, CEng, FRAgS, FIAgrE.

I was the project leader at Silsoe Research Institute for all areas of research directed to improving the welfare of animals during transport.

I departed the Institute at the end of September, moving to ADAS and continuing with my existing line of research.

Recent research topics, funded by Defra, have focussed on engineering improvements to the design and operation of vehicles for the road transportation of farm animals. In particular, the work has focussed on the application of mechanical ventilation on vehicles to optimise the thermal environment around the animals.

It is envisaged that further research, again funded by Defra, will be conducted in the forthcoming years to provide Defra with a sound scientific basis for negotiations in changes to improve animal welfare during transport.
